Telecom defined the technology-led infrastructure success. Equally, brick and mortar excellence came from another company, this time from the south. GMR Infrastructure, started by Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao, a mechanical engineer, began with a bang as the power sector opened up in the nineties. It set up three greenfield power plants. Later, it forayed into highways and has already completed six projects.
GMR gave India a feel of world class infrastructure with an international airport in Hyderabad and the refurbished and expanded Delhi airport. The T3 terminal in Delhi is truly world class. A billion-dollar company today, GMR defines infrastructure development in India.
