Having decided that the world is its stage, another company with humble origins (selling landline instruments) that rode the modern telecom revolution is Bharti Airtel. As a telecom operator, Bharti Airtel did have a head-start, having begun operations in the mid-1990s. It has played its cards smartly since then it gave Indians a first-hand experience of the voice revolution with extensive reach, service quality and innovative pricing. In recent years it sought to expand the India telecom story beyond the country's shores by first unsuccessfully targeting MTN and finally getting it right with Africa's Zain. With over 200 million subscribers and operations straddling Asia and Africa, the company has in probably the shortest possible time become India's first telecom multinational.
